Below are 5 best practices for creating content that will help your search engine optimization rankings:
1. Know Your Market
Be sure you understand the audience for your content. As with all things marketing, you will get better results when your content is targeted to a specific audience, is well written, and is different than what your competition is doing.
Google has to be able to access your content to know that it exists (site structure, mobile-responsiveness, site speed).
Statistics back it up: 53% of users will abandon a site that takes more than three seconds to load.
Generate recognition by being published or shared across other websites. You will grow your online presence by being recognized by other websites — when people share and link to your articles, it signals to Google that your content is worthwhile.
4. Content Topic Selection
Use insider knowledge of your industry to select topics that will drive traffic. Think about the terms your customers use to find answers to problems. Once you have a list of topics, select your article topic based on the competitiveness of the topic and the value (understand the value of your content).
Here are some tips on how to find content topic ideas:
a. Use Google Suggest. Go to Google search bar and start typing, Google will suggest the rest of the sentence. This will give you insight into common search strings related to your phrase.
b. If you want to go a step further, use Google’s “Searches related”. After you search Google, scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see a section titled “Searches related to…” above the search result page links.
. . .
Google suggests these because they are examples of related terms people are using to search. Now you have a list of detailed content topic ideas.
c. Spend time discovering what works. Some media types work better than others: videos vs text, short vs long content, etc. The media type will directly impact how you create content. Pay attention to which content types your audience spends the most time on.
Don’t sit and wait, promote your content! Remember the topic of awareness we just talked about!? No one will know about your great content if you don’t publish and share it.
